As I said in my speech, I'm-I truly believe that if we stay firm in our resolve, resist the temptation to give in to the terrorists, and believe in the transformative capacity of liberty, someday other nations in the region will share the blessings of democracy and liberty. Someday they'll know that they'll have governments that respond to the people. They'll build schools instead of bombs. That they'll not want a war with their neighbors, but want to live in peace.
JERUSALEM - Most people skip the little art gallery at Israel's Holocaust museum Yad Vashem because they think it will be too depressing. After an emotionally draining tour through a maze of testimonies and artifacts, few have the stamina to look at so-called Holocaust Art, which seems to promise only more dark images of death and destruction: skeletal shapes emerging from smokestacks, hollowed eyes looking through barbed wire, piles of emaciated corpses.
The State Department, which has never been particularly friendly to Jews, is getting a little cover for its unrelenting deference to the enemies of Israel. The Jews eager to cover for the diplomats are the weak, the naive and, alas, the familiar. They're the liberal, mostly Democratic, Jews offended by the "aggressive" Israelis who understand what's at stake in the Middle East. They're embarrassed by and resentful of the "righteous Gentiles" eager to help Israel prevent a second Holocaust, this one in the Middle East, rather than to contribute to building another Holocaust museum later. Israel once united the contentious factions of American Jews, but now the mere existence of Israel exacerbates tension between the realists and the deaf, blind dreamers.
A similar email could be circulated within the arts, and like the Nobel Prize list, it would reveal far more about the email authors than their slandered subjects. As of the production of this article, a Google search for "Palestinian art" yields 48,000 hits and change, while "Israeli art" yields 153,000. In the newest edition of "Janson's History of Art" - arguably the art history textbook on American campuses - the index listing on "Islamic art" carries no reference to Palestinian art, although it is important to note that it carries no listing at all of either Jewish or Israeli art. Harry N. Abrams' recently published "The Israel Museum: Jerusalem" devotes 15 pages to "Israeli art" and five pages to "Islamic art;" the only listing approaching Palestinian art is one reference to "Pale...
JERUSALEM - Two thousand years after they were written and decades after they were found in desert caves, some of the world- famous Dead Sea Scrolls went online for the first time on Monday in a project launched by Israel's national museum and the web giant Google.
