  • Israel's Supreme Court will soonhear three petitions from civil rights groups challenging the government's compliance with that policy, arguing that it discriminates against the 20 percent of Israeli citizens who are not Jewish. Yoav Loeff, a spokesman for the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, one of the parties to the court petition, argued that "the obligation of the Israel Lands Authority, as a governmental agency, to the principle of equality is absolute and much stronger than any other commitment to the JNF.

  • JERUSALEM -- With the apparent support of the Bush administration, Israel on Monday announced plans for building 530 new homes in the West Bank, as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon pressed ahead with his plan to separate Israel from the Palestinians. Construction of the new houses in four settlements near Jerusalem will be in full swing before the end of the year, said Kobi Bleich, a spokesman for the Israel Lands Authority.

  • Israel is unique among the nations in not being a country of its citizens but of "Jewish people everywhere." No other country defines itself as a country for members of a particular religion (including converts) regardless of where they live. No other country has supranational entities that have authority superseding state authority and native rights. For example, the Jewish National Fund is not a state agency but it has on its own website the amazing statement that "The Jewish National Fund is the custodian of the land of Israel on behalf of its owners, Jewish people everywhere." 91% of the land (most taken from the 530 Palestinian towns and villages depopulated between 1947-1949) is not privately owned but turned over from the custodian of "absentee property" to the JNF for lease by J...

  • Israel's parliament is weighing a law that would reserve almost one-seventh of the nation's land area for Jewish ownership, touching off a heated debate over whether the plan undermines Israel's democracy or is essential to preserve its Jewish character. The land, comprising almost 1,000 square miles scattered around Israel, is owned by the Jewish National Fund - a public trust set up by the Zionist movement a century ago to purchase tracts in Palestine for Jewish settlement.

  • The face-value defects of this proposed bill are numerous. For one, the Congressmen's aides reportedly admit that the proposal was largely derived from consultations with a senior advisor to Israel's right wing, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with Israeli academic Justus Weiner, who has dedicated a significant portion of his career to the character assassination of Columbia University's Edward Said, a Palestinian Christian by birth. Moreover, "the systematic destruction" (the Congressmen's words) of Palestine's Christian communities at the hands of the Palestinian Authority is a falsehood as it stands. The vast majority of Christian organizations in the Bethlehem District, home to the largest number of Christians in the West Bank or Gaza, have attested to this through p...
