WASHINGTON - Muslims in America aren't cooperating enough with law enforcement to counter the radicalization of young followers by al-Qaida-linked groups, said a House leader on terrorism issues, renewing debate about religion's role in motivating extremists and what the United States can do without alienating the Islamic world.

Former KGB officer Konstantin Preobrazhensky, who defected to the United States in 2003, has these intriguing questions to ask: Whom is Russian intelligence targeting in the Islamic world? Why won't Russia help the United States in Iran? Why can't America and Russia fight terrorism together?

[Naim]'s personal project involves what he calls "negotiating the future of sharia." As Islamic societies struggle to define themselves in a globalized world and some talk of creating Islamic states to codify sharia, he says the state and religion must be kept separate. But religion should still have its place in political life, allowing Muslims to express principles of sharia as they see fit. He believes this is truly Islamic, and that articulating the reasons why will help ordinary Muslims not be taken in by political slogans.
The essence of the Sufi's message had been that certain verses in the Qur'an represented the universal, eternal message of Islam, while others were relevant to a particular historical context and no longer viable. "Specifically [he argued] for equality for women...

President Obama's appointment of Rashad Hussain, his deputy associate counsel, as special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations, charged with safeguarding and protecting "the interests of the Muslim world," should be of serious concern to Congress and the American public. Especially since Hussain, a devout Muslim, has a history of participating in events connected with the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the Chicago Tribune, "the world's most influential Islamic fundamentalist group" whose goal is to create Muslim states throughout the world.
In 1991, a memo written by Mohamed Akram for the Shura Council of the Muslim Brotherhood spelled out the objective of the organization. Akram said the...

WASHINGTON -- Which is more critical to the United States in the Islamic world -- that a government be democratic, or that it be a friend and ally in the war against al-Qaida and Islamic extremism?
In the Bush era, the answer has seemed unequivocal. We are for democracy first. For democracy is the best guarantee of our security interests. As Condi Rice famously said in 2005 at the American University in Cairo:

NORFOLK, Va., July 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Kerry-Edwards campaign (Part 2 of 3):
RECOMMENDATION: (p. 377) Just as we did in the Cold War, we need to defend our ideals abroad vigorously. America does stand up for its values. The United States defended, and still defends, Muslims against tyrants and criminals in Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. If the United States does not act aggressively to define itself in the Islamic world, the extremists will gladly do the job for us.

WASHINGTON (HedgeWorld.com) - The Senate Banking Committee, in its July 13 hearing on money laundering and terror financing issues in the Middle East, heard a warning from a former scholar-in- residence of the Treasury Department that the growth of Islamic finance in that region entails "degrees of separation through superfluous trades and leases" that make anti-laundering law enforcement more challenging than otherwise.
Dr. Mahmoud El-Gamal, the Treasury Department's scholar-in- residence in the second half of 2004 and the chairman of Islamic Economics Finance and Management at Rice University in Houston was called, the Banking Committee chairman, Sen. Richard Shelby, said, to "enlighten us on Islamic Banking practices and whether the gradual spread of Islamic banking poses challenges ...
...That confusion can occur anywhere in the world, but in an exchange of e-mails Friday Mr. El-Gamal...

CAMP ANACONDA, Iraq Staff Sgt. Magda Khalifa is a long way from her Rutherford home. The New Jersey native, who joined the military after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, is working in the Sunni Triangle in a job that has brought her close to danger but has also given her no end of rewards.
Her position is especially interesting since she is a practicing Muslim at a time when many people in the Islamic world including here in Iraq see the United States as the enemy.

The polls, one by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the other by the Washington Post and ABC News, indicate that almost half of Americans have a negative perception of Islam and that one in four of those surveyed consistently believe stereotypes such as: "Muslims value life less than other people," and "The Muslim religion teaches violence and hatred.
The Post-ABC poll found that one-fourth of Americans "admitted to harboring prejudice toward Muslims," which experts said is "fueled in part by political statements and media reports that focus almost solely on the actions of Muslim extremists."
American Muslims have also worked to help build bridges of understanding between the United States and the Islamic world. American Muslim leaders recently took part in diplomati...
