Sponge iron is a cheaper substitute for coke, which is used as an essential ingredient in the production of steel. Sponge iron industry in India being mainly coal based is one of the very polluting industries under strict regulations imposed by central pollution control authority, implementation of which rests upon the provincial pollution control board and different local bodies under it. It is seen that there have been more than 45% and 30% fall in production of paddy in survey areas of Purulia and Bankura districts respectively. The percentage fall in the number of livestock due to death caused by diarrhea has also been quite high between the year before and after the factory came into being, indicating the extent of negative impact not only on the well being of the rural households ...

With its profusion of languages, ethnic groups and regional diversities, with its unique caste system, with its contrast between information technology and industry billionaires and the nearly 300 million people who live below the poverty line, with its mixture of Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent philosophy and outbreaks of savage communal violence, and with its success as a parliamentary democracy despite having 400 million people who cannot read or write, India remains a bewilderingly complex country. A powerful moral leader as well as a wily politician, Gandhi wanted Indians to be proud of their past, to wear Indian rather than foreign dress, to challenge their colonial overlords through peaceful protest and noncooperation and not through violence, and to eliminate discrimination against...

The focus of this paper is to examine how current trends in globalization and attendant activities like outsourcing and off-shoring are affecting patterns of consumption, and thereby impacting the environment. The skewed pattern of consumption, whether measured in absolute terms or on a per capita basis, by developed countries is being affected as income levels increase in developing countries and emerging economies. This shift in the pattern of consumption is a self-regulating process to reduce inequities and we explain this analogously through the Gaia hypothesis, which is a planetary self-correcting process of natural systems. Models, arguments, and some evidence are presented to make our case. In our conclusion, we raise a post-Gaia perspective and we ask whether the current self-re...
