DES MOINES (AP) - A controversial request by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for more authority to control factory farm pollution goes to a vote Monday in front of a state commission.
The request for an administrative rules change would allow DNR Director Jeff Vonk more discretion in denying livestock confinement construction permits. He has said the authority is needed as factory farm construction reached record highs for five years in a row.

CWD prevention meeting March 1 A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, in Waukon to discuss recent efforts to prevent chronic wasting disease and other livestock-related diseases in Allamakee County. The meeting will be from 7-9 p.m. at the Waukon Banquet Center, 612 Rossville Road, and will feature Dr. Dale Garner, chief of the wildlife bureau for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Dr. David Schmitt, state veterinarian for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. The meeting will be an opportunity for the public to hear concerns regarding the threat of disease to both wildlife and domestic livestock as well as ask questions. Wendy Pauly

A new program from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will allow bragging about big fish to go beyond the photo on the wall in the local bait shop.
The new Iowa master angler award replaces the big fish award that had attracted between 300-400 submissions each year. Anglers who catch a qualifying fish will receive a certificate and decal announcing his or her success.

BELLEVUE, Iowa - State agencies in Iowa and Wisconsin will be spraying to slow the spread of gypsy moths in Jackson County, Iowa, and Grant County, Wis., early this week.

Campers planning trips to state parks for the holiday weekend need to remember new rules for labeling firewood, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said this week.
The DNR issued a reminder that the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship now requires all firewood sold or acquired in Iowa to include specific labels and the delivery ticket for bulk firewood. The requirements are designed to help prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer, a destructive insect.

Car wash season is near, and the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Commission is asking fundraising organizers and the Dubuque City Council to consider cleaning up the impact on water quality.
Rarely enforced, most weekend fundraisers are in violation of the Clean Water Act and water-discharge standards, said Bill Ehm, of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources' Water Quality Bureau. The soap, scum and debris washing into the storm sewer does affect water quality.
