Mesa police are giving special treatment to the investigation on the assault of recall candidate Jerry Lewis.
Sgt. Ed Wessing, Mesa police spokesman, said the department is going to check a padlock apparently thrown at Lewis on Saturday for fingerprints and DNA evidence, a step that normally wouldn't be done in most other simple assault cases.

BANGOR, Maine -- The Rev. Robert Carlson was under investigation by the Maine State Police before he was found dead in the Penobscot River on Sunday, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The investigation started "last Thursday at the request of the Penobscot County District Attorney's Office," McCausland said late Monday afternoon. "State police began an investigation of Carlson and this was after the DA's office had received a letter.

PETERSBURG - It will now be up to a special prosecutor to determine whether a fatal shooting of a motorist by a Petersburg police officer was justified.
State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said that special agents with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Richmond Field Office, have completed their investigation into the fatal shooting on Dec. 15. Molnar said that the report was turned over to Commonwealth's Attorney Cassandra Conover for review to determine whether or not the shooting was justified.

PARIS -- The defense attorney in a sexual assault trial Wednesday questioned the investigative methods of Rumford police officers and a DNA analyst at the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory.
Capt. Daniel Garbarini of the Rumford Police Department and former Rumford police Lt. Mark Cayer took the stand Wednesday afternoon in Oxford County Superior Court to testify about their roles in the investigation of James V. Cole, 32, of Rumford.

Newell has contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Charleston requesting an investigation into possible civil rights violations.

BLOOMINGTON -- State police investigators found no racial bias in an off-duty trooper's traffic stop of a Bloomington detective in September 2004, according to a statement Wednesday.
The Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation found Master Sgt. Greg Beoletto did not use racial bias in stopping detective Michael Johnson, the statement said.
