  • A 13-year-old discovered the skeletal remains of an unknown person yesterday in a wooded area in north Columbia. The discovery occurred at 9:15 a.m., west of Roger I. Wilson Memorial Drive, in a spot south of the Boone County Jail and not far from Columbia Soccer Club's Pride Park. In a written statement, Columbia police Officer Jessie Haden said the juvenile told an adult family member about the discovery and the family member immediately called police.

  • JOLIET, Ill. - While a small-town police officer is free after being wrongly jailed for a shooting spree along the Illinois- Indiana border that left one dead, prosecutors and defense attorneys are at odds over what went wrong. Attorney Dave Carlson said Wednesday that Lynwood Police Officer Brian Dorian is the victim of a botched investigation. It is not the first time that accusation has been made against the Will County state's attorney's office.

  • LONDON The investigation into an alleged plot to blow up jetliners over the Atlantic zeroed in Saturday on brothers arrested in Pakistan and Britain, one named as a key al-Qaida suspect who left the family's home in England years ago and the other described as gentle and polite. British authorities, meanwhile, warned against complacency, saying the detention of several dozen suspects had not eliminated the danger. The terror threat level in Britain remained "critical" its highest designation and delays, flight cancellations and intense security continued to greet travelers at London airports.

  • The investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year- old Georgia student by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is in the hands of the district attorney. Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright on Tuesday evening received a report, including all witness statements, compiled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Milledgeville Police Department, according to the two agencies.

  • The Central State University track team member who died in an apparent drowning in Florida has been identified as junior Jasmine Crenshaw, according to school officials. Crenshaw, 22, was found Sunday in a lake outside the team hotel in Clermont, Fla., near Orlando. The school's track team was in Florida for two competitions Friday in Tampa and Saturday in Orlando.

  • LOS ANGELES - It's been almost three months since Michael Jackson's shocking death, and while Los Angeles police are close to wrapping up their investigation, the decision on whether to bring criminal charges is at least weeks and perhaps months away, legal experts say. Last month the Los Angeles County coroner ruled Jackson's June 25 death a homicide caused primarily by the powerful anesthetic propofol in combination with the sedative lorazepam. Both were administered in Jackson's mansion by his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray.

  • About 140 people have been indicted on more than 420 charges in Montgomery and Floyd counties as part of a 16-month drug investigation, authorities announced Friday. It's the largest drug bust in the New River Valley in recent memory, and a group of law enforcement officials gave the details behind it during an afternoon news conference in the Floyd County courtroom.

  • Botetourt County authorities are continuing their investigation of telephone threats that led to the evacuations of Eagle Rock Elementary and James River High School on Wednesday afternoon. The two calls -- which warned of a bomb in the elementary school and referenced a nonspecific danger at James River -- came about 11 a.m. from a pay phone at the Unimart on Jamison Avenue in Southeast Roanoke, according to Botetourt County Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle.

  • Thirty-five people were arrested Tuesday in a large-scale sweep connected with a yearlong federal drug and gang investigation. Authorities called it the largest federal criminal case ever in Connecticut. Tuesday's arrests, which began before dawn, brought the total to 90. Federal authorities are seeking 15 others.
