So it's 1972. And, as James Wolcott puts it, memorably, in his new memoir, "Lucking Out," "how lucky I was arriving in New York just as everything was about to go to hell.
It was Norman Mailer -- more or less -- who got him there. A letter of introduction had slipped Wolcott through the cracks at the Village Voice, where, as Wolcott puts it, "The Voice thrived on the distinction between keyboard peckers and stir-crazy amateurs in fifth-floor walkups, presenting a Beat-flavored alternative to the vaunted notion of the author as a member of a sacred novitiate."

SALT LAKE CITY -- A boisterous Rocky Anderson led a cheering crowd Thursday at the state Capitol, imploring lawmakers and Gov. Gary Herbert to reverse any positions they've taken that assert climate change is not man-caused.
The rally included the introduction of a letter with more than a 1,000 signatories -- including environmental activist Tim DeChristoper -- that the controversial former Salt Lake mayor said will be delivered to all 104 lawmakers as well as Herbert.

[Wilfredo Lam] also traveled to Mexico in 1938 to spend time with the artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. He had his first solo show at the Galerie Pierre Loeb in Paris in 1939, and his work was exhibited with [Pablo Picasso]'s at the Perls Galleries in New York City. When Germany's Third Reich army invaded Paris, Lam moved his home base to Marseille, France (along with his confidantes Andre' Masson, Claude Lévi-Strauus, André Bretón and other artists in the Surrealist movement) and later to Martinique where Lam met Aimé Césaire, the Caribbean's strongest proponent of the African diasporic ideology of Negritude. Lam would not only work as a painter, but with ceramics and sculpture, and he later illustrated the book El último Viaje del Buque Fantasma (The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship)...

[William H. Goetzmann] may strike some readers as high-mindedly off-putting in his introduction, where he rejects the notion that American intellectuals from 1776 to 1899 were "mere custodians of knowledge," and describes them, borrowing from Henry James, as "hard core creators of culture" who "feel cultural anxiety' or a compulsion constantly to redefine the context of reality in which they find themselves." He even borders on the jingoistic with claims that America was the world's first truly cosmopolitan civilization and allusions to Whitman's description of our country as a '"nation of nations' ... with the 'course of universal being' flowing through it.
Right from page one we meet figures like [Tom Paine] in their own times and on their own terms. When Paine declared, "The Birthda...

We're throwing away good water," [Bill "Woody" Woodworth] told the Weekly in 2000. "We're flushing toilets with drinking water, and it just doesn't make any sense. We could be using cisterns as neighborhoods or as individuals.
Woodworth had scrapbooks and folders dating back to the late '70s filled with the letters and proposals he'd drafted and sent to various state and local agencies encouraging governmental support for more aggressive rainfall storage. In the introduction to one such letter, in December, 1978, he estimated that the Peninsula (not including Fort Ord) lost about 22,000 acre feet of potable water through the storm drains. Woodworth wrote: "Countless gallons of precious fresh water are cascading down Peninsula streets and sewers into the Pacific Ocean...The irretrievab...

MORGANTOWN - Buried within the letter the NCAA sent to West Virginia president James Clements this week as an introduction to its notice of allegations within the school's football program was one rather ominous line.
In explaining to Clements the procedure for responding to the notice of allegations, the NCAA's vice president for enforcement, David Price, wrote that the group's Committee on Infractions can review the school's response either through the summary disposition process or an in-person hearing.
