ORLANDO, Fla. - Craig Taylor wasn't much interested in vacationing in Orlando with his parents this month - until he and his girlfriend plugged into the hype swirling around the new Harry Potter attraction.
So Taylor, 23, a police dispatcher who lives near Manchester, England, and girlfriend Katherine Lucarz, 22, both fans of the wildly popular books and movies about the boy wizard, decided they had to tag along to experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. That's where they were on a sunny, cool weekday afternoon in early December, taking a break among the other Muggles in the shadow of the towering Hogwarts castle.

Don't expect the Incredible Hulk to smash Cinderella's Castle, but Walt Disney Co.'s purchase of Marvel Entertainment Inc. and its comic villains and troubled heroes will shake up the theme-park world as much as it will the movie business.
Last week's $4 billion deal opens the Magic Kingdom to Iron Man and Dr. Doom - which hold more appeal to teenage boys than Mickey and Minnie - and puts in doubt NBC Universal's licensing agreement for Spider-Man, one of many enduring characters created for Marvel by comic-book legend Stan Lee.

The amusement park business is having its ups and downs, but the parent company of Kings Island and Cedar Point says it's well- positioned to ride out the recession.
Cedar Fair LP of Sandusky, whose New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol is FUN, joined the big leagues of amusement companies in 2006 when it bought Kings Island and four other Paramount parks for $1.24 billion cash. It also assumed massive debt, which is weighing down its balance sheet.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Dave Surgan dropped into a crouch, then leaped into the air and let out an eardrum-rupturing yelp.
His imitation of a crazed monkey during a recent audition at Universal Studios Orlando helped him land a job frightening some of the hundreds of thousands of visitors who will come to be scared, be very scared, at the theme park resort's multimillion-dollar Halloween celebration this month.

Even with Six Flags' planned divestment of Houston's AstroWorld announced this week, industry analysts said they are no closer to determining the most likely buyer of the Oklahoma City-based amusement park giant.
However, the sale of the single Texas park, seen by many as an attempt to cash in on real estate values over diminished park ticket returns, suggests Six Flags may be willing to sell off individual, smaller properties instead of a full, 30-park sweep, said Amusement Today magazine publisher Gary Slade and Motley Fool senior stock analyst Rick A. Munarriz.
