  • Ten years ago Stephen Sayoc snapped his Achilles heel and had to have major surgery. Doctors were not sure if he would make a complete recovery due to the severity of the injury. Fortunately, he made a remarkable recovery and is presently the top-ranked Beach Tennis Player in the United States and is ranked 46th in the world by the International Tennis Federation. Sayoc, who is the director of tennis at South Towns Tennis Center and one of the area's top ranked tennis players, will be 42 years old next week. He is in phenomenal shape and will be playing in the International Beach Tennis Championships this week on Long Island. The tournament is the most prestigious and largest of its kind in the United States, with players from all over the world competing.

  • Lleyton Hewitt criticized the International Tennis Federation on Sunday, saying it was a "disgrace" the way the sports body reacted to Australia's decision to skip a Davis Cup series last month in India for security reasons. The Australians were fined $10,000 and lost the hosting rights of their next home match. But they weren't suspended for refusing to travel to India for the May 8-10 zonal series. It's all a circus. The whole thing is a circus," Hewitt said after beating Ivo Karlovic in five sets in the first round of the French Open. "The way the ITF went about it was a disgrace in the first place.

  • Associated Press French tennis player Richard Gasquet was suspended Monday following a positive cocaine test and will miss the French Open. The International Tennis Federation expects to have a panel in place within 60 days for a hearing. Gasquet could face a two-year ban if found guilty.

  • Athletes, entertainers and politicians who have to fend off rumors and accusations - not to mention pesky reporters, paparazzi and drug-testers - need their heroes, too. And now they have one. He is French tennis player Richard Gasquet. Gasquet last week was about to be suspended by the International Tennis Federation for using cocaine. But he beat the rap, convincing an ITF "tribunal panel" of his innocence because, drum roll, please... he kissed a woman who had ingested the stuff.

  • NEW HAVEN -- We have the mindless French International Tennis Federation to thank for the presence of the one Grand Slam winner in either the women's or men's singles field at the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament this week. Amelie Mauresmo, 2006 champion at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon -- and winner of her first-round match over Kaia Kanepi at The Pen Tuesday -- is gracing these grounds because the French tennis federation hadn't the backbone or common sense to treat one of the greatest players in the country's history with respect. We raise a glass of Bordeaux to Ms. Mauresmo, who twice told the French federation to kiss off in the truest sense of the Johnny Paycheck country anthem, "Take This Job and Shove It.

  • Mac at head of table John McEnroe will receive the International Tennis Federation's highest honor.

  • By Jim Fuller Register Staff Expect the International Tennis Federation's Olympic Web site to be a popular destination for computers in Pilot Pen Tennis tournament headquarters later this week.

  • Alison Riske of Peters Township had one of the biggest wins of her tennis career this past weekend when she captured the $75,000 International Tennis Federation's Barnstaple Open in Great Britain. Although she entered the tournament unranked, Riske defeated four seeded players to take the crown. In the final, she defeated second- seeded Johanna Larsson, the defending championship and No. 66- ranked player in the world, by 6-2, 6-0 scores.
