As Vietnam emerges into world markets, Vietnamese organizations are facing the predicament of how to avoid the low-cost labor trap and move up the production value-chain by improving quality and productivity. Continuous improvement (CI) practices have proved fundamental to building and sustaining competitive advantage in other Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. If Vietnamese organizations are to pursue higher value-added activities, CI will be critical for them, too. Despite the tremendous interest in Vietnam from the international business community, little research on Vietnamese management practices has been done, particularly on the use of CI techniques. The language barrier, lack of reliable business data, and the culture of government and corporate secrecy in V...

In this article we present ethnographic evidence from China and the UK to show that the state's migration discourse is not simply a dominant force imposed externally by the state on migrants, but is itself shaped by migrant strategies. These strategies lead to migratory, employment and survival practices that in turn produce the social phenomena (bogus asylum seeking, an informal labour market, illegal border crossing) that originally informed and justified the discourse itself. Furthermore, and as a final irony, some of the very discursive categories themselves are not simply externally imposed on migrants. In this article we will show how for instance 'legality', 'skills', or 'qualifications' are not intrinsic qualities that migrants do or do not possess, but bureaucratic statuses man...

Money market rate premiums have been high and volatile. The difference between money market rates and central bank key rates has been the widest since the international financial turbulence started in August last year. Norwegian money market rates increased sharply after international risk premiums spilled over into the Norwegian market. Foreign exchange markets have also been volatile. Investors have shown interest in the large and most liquid currencies. Growth is also slowing in the Norwegian economy. Household consumption has stagnated and house prices are falling. Monetary policy in Norway is oriented towards annual consumer price inflation of close to 2.5% over time. In recent years, inflation has on average been somewhat lower, but fairly close to 2.5%. Key to the future of the Chinese working class is whether the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) can reform itself into a genuine labor movement. Although 200 million of the 700 million Chinese workers are already members of its' enterprise-level unions, the majority of those unions are controlled by management, and few engage in effective collective bargaining with the employer. Although the ACFTU might be regarded as part of a ruling trinity in China, its senior partners at all levels - government and the Communist Party - have clearly overshadowed its role. But the Chinese media, international labor, international business, and even its harshest critics are reporting significant developments within the ACFTU.
