  • A conference on "the Islamic Awakening," Tehran's effort to rebrand the popular Arab uprisings of the past year, led to difficult questions this week, some involving Syria. It was meant to be a crowning moment in which Iran put its own Islamic stamp on the Arab Spring. Over a thousand young activists were flown here this week (at government expense) for a conference on "the Islamic Awakening," Tehran's effort to rebrand the popular Arab uprisings of the past year. As delegates flooded into a vast auditorium next to a space needle in western Tehran, a screen showed images of the Iranian revolution in 1979, morphing seamlessly into footage of young Arab protesters in Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya, and Yemen.

  • TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's top leader warned Arab nations swept up in uprisings against autocratic regimes not to allow the U.S. or NATO to influence the types of post-revolution political systems they form. Never trust America, NATO, and the criminal regimes like Britain, France and Italy who for a long time divided and plundered your lands," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told an international Islamic conference in Tehran on Saturday. "Hold suspicion of them and don't believe their smiles. Behind those smiles and promises lie conspiracy and treason.

  • The accounting and auditing organization for Islamic financial institutions (AAOIFI) has taken the proper initiative to develop accounting, auditing, governance, ethics, and Shari'ah standards for Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIs). The AAOIFI standards serve as a guideline that may reflect the unique characteristics of IFIs and become a useful tool to meet the various needs of IFIs. Currently, one the major challenges facing Islamic Financial Institutions (IFSs) lies in the preparation of financial statements under different accounting standards and which may result to problem of comparability, reliability and compliance level's measurement. This has, however, resulted in a heated debate among scholars that has hitherto translated to the evolving existing literature surrounding the ...

  • TEHRAN, IRAN -- Iran's triumphal stewardship of the Nonaligned Movement summit meeting here veered off script Thursday when the two most prominently featured guest speakers, President Mo-hammed Morsi of Egypt and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, denounced the repression of the armed uprising in Syria, a close Iranian ally. Syria's foreign minister walked out in protest at Morsi's remarks at the meeting, the largest international conference in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

  • To stay feeds the Iraqi nationalist insurrection and serves as a magnet to attract Arab and Muslim volunteers determined to do battle with the Yankee superpower. As well, staying in Iraq, cost what it may, will widen ever more the circle of Iraqi opponents of American presence in the country. Today, this "club" in Iraq consists of the Sunni Arab minority and a sector of the Shi'a. Without a clear and defined American departure schedule, it is likely that these opponents will see the rest of the Shi'a majority rally to their camp, for there is a truly strong nationalist sentiment in Iraq. And to say that an American withdrawal will unleash a civil war is not defensible since the country is already plunged into a major conflict claiming new victims every day. The Muslim world, by and larg...

  • If there is a silver lining to the dark cloud of the terrorist bombings in London, it is that there seems to be a stirring realization in the Muslim community in Britain, and here in the United States as well, that they are an important front line against violent Muslim extremism. Almost four years after the September 11 bombings, this reaction is long overdue, but clearly is movement in a welcome direction. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has forcefully challenged his country's Muslims to take on the "evil ideology" behind the London attacks that killed 56 people, the most lethal strikes on London since World War II. He called on Muslim leaders to "defeat it by reason and argument," as he said last week, proposing an international conference on Islamic extremism and its origins, for ...
