  • ATHENS, Greece - U.S. Olympic Committee officials angrily denounced gymnastics' international federation for sending a letter to Olympic gold medalist Paul Hamm asking him to give up his gold medal to rectify a judging error. The USOC said the letter was an attempt to pressure Hamm into giving up his medal in the wake of the scoring error during the men's allaround gymnastics competition Aug. 18.

  • AARHUS, Denmark - Sparked by a judging debacle at the Athens Olympics and helped by some of the best technology in sports, the International Gymnastics Federation is using a new pay-as-you-go replay system at world championships that can break down every routine, frame by frame. Competition starts Saturday with men's team qualifying. When the first disagreement arises, teams will start paying. It will cost $300 to file the first protest, $500 for the second and $1,000 for the third. If a team wins the challenge, it gets the money back. If not, it goes to the charitable foundation of the federation (FIG).

  • LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Gymnasts will now have to start showing ID long before the Olympics. Beginning Jan. 1, all junior and senior gymnasts who represent their countries at most international meets will need a license from the International Gymnastics Federation. The licenses will include gymnasts' name, sex, country and date of birth and will be their proof of age for their entire career.

  • Two Chinese gymnasts who anchored a 2000 Olympic bronze medal- winning team might have been too young, creating the chance their hardware gets handed to a U.S. squad that finished fourth. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) is investigating whether Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun met the age limit -- gymnasts must be 16 during an Olympic year -- for the Sydney Games, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
