However, the extent to which U.S. higher education institutions have been successful in achieving diversity, especially in relation to stimulating diverse social interactions between the international and American student body, is an area of study that requires further investigation. Oklahoma State University has a higher enrollment of international graduate students this fall compared to the national average, according to reports released by the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D.C. Nationwide, offers of admission for international applicants to U.S. graduate schools decreased slightly from 2008, the first decline since 2004. The number of new international graduate student enrollments stayed roughly the same, however, causing the first- time enrollment to flat-line across the country.
This study sought to empirically assess the relation of marital status, ethnicity and academic achievement in relation to the adjustment strains experienced by international graduate students. One hundred and forty nine international students attending five universities in the United States participated in the study. Correlational and multiple regression analyses indicated that married international students experienced lower levels of social adjustment strain than single students, and that Asian students experienced more overall adjustment strain, more specific strains related to education and English, and lower levels of English proficiency than European students. This study analyzed the retention and completion rates of international students seeking a master's degree at an American university. Records of 866 international students from 1987-2002 were investigated. Of these, 622 graduated, 92 dropped out of the program, and 152 are still active. Predictor variables analyzed to determine retention to degree completion included TOEFL scores (both raw and composite), age, gender, geographic categories of native country, native language, academic area of concentration (grouped into five general areas of study), graduate grade point average in the first nine hours of graduate study, and admission status (regular or probationary).
