The British Petroleum Statistical Review of World Energy predicted in 2004 that available global oil reserves would be depleted by 2045 and that U.S. reserves would be depleted by 2015. Also in 2004, the Oil Depletion Analysis Center, a British non- profit group, predicted that "even with a relatively low demand growth, we see an unbridgeable supply/demand gap opening up after 2007.
This spring, the Paris-based International Energy Agency recently announced it is preparing a sharp downward revision of its world- wide oil supply forecast, casting doubt on whether the oil supply can keep up with demand, despite recent claims of newly found shale reserves and the existence of untapped oil fields. Substantially higher oil prices may be in the cards.

Does the IAEA inspect Iran?
Open access The International Atomic Energy Agency has access to Iranian nuclear facilities, pictured, under a safeguards agreement, and in February 2007 it verified that Iran had not diverted to illegal use any material it had declared.

The International Energy Agency said Wednesday its demand forecasts remain largely unchanged at 85.9 million barrels per day for 2007, but a slipping U.S. economy could lower its crude oil price forecast for next year.
In its monthly Oil Market Report, IEA said its 2007 U.S. forecast faces downside risk, "which would be negative for crude oil prices, and thus our $65/bbl forecast for next year may prove too high.

Inflation has been slightly higher than projected. Measured by the consumer price index (CPI), inflation is now higher than 3%. A strong rise in prices for electricity and petrol has pushed up CPI inflation since autumn 2007. Inflation has increased in many countries. Oil and gas prices have risen further through spring. Capacity utilization in Norway is high. An ample supply of labor, strong productivity growth and considerable terms of trade gains through several years have boosted the growth potential of the Norwegian economy. Growth in the Norwegian economy seems to have slowed as expected in 2008 Q1. Enterprises in Norges Bank's regional network report high capacity utilization but moderating growth in most of the industries. Monetary policy in Norway is oriented towards annual con...

The number of Arab governments truly antagonistic to the US dwindled to almost none once Saddam Hussein was removed from power in early 2003. However, regimes that have long been friendly to the US are increasingly reluctant to follow Washington's lead on any issue. They are not enemies of the US, but they are not faithful allies, either. They have chosen diplomacy and reconciliation in their own relations with Iran, and they have tried to act as intermediaries and peacemakers in Lebanon and Palestine. This new independence of Gulf countries will be a challenge for the next US administration. Washington can no longer assume that the Gulf countries will follow its lead even if they do not like its policies. But this new assertiveness and independence are also an opportunity for the US to...

Equally troubling to both of these camps is the Kyoto Protocol's looming expiration in 2012, with its results limited and no follow-on arrangements in place. Since Kyoto's modest emissions targets were secondary to its goal of establishing a global system for deeper future reductions, supporters of binding international targets and timetables for emissions are alarmed by the relentless ticking of the clock.

In a 2003 Economist op-ed, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei proposed that the time was right to re-examine multilateral approaches to the nuclear fuel cycle.1 Similar studies had already been undertaken in the 1970s and 1980s but had not produced concrete results.2 Nonetheless, states responded with a plethora of proposals aimed at thwarting the unchecked spread of uranium-enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing technologies, for example, by suggesting means of assuring nuclear fuel supplies and establishing international nuclear fuel-cycle centers. Technologically, the program emphasized the development and deployment of more advanced nuclear power reactors and, more controversially, the use of new spent fuel reprocessing technologies said to...
