  • Behind every great band ... there's a great band. Well, at least in the case of many great '60s groups, including The Beach Boys, The Monkees and The Byrds. All of them had in-studio backing from an expert pack of studio musicians known in L.A. circles as "The Wrecking Crew." That's also the name of a documentary about these unsung heroes, to be screened this week at Bergen Community College. TELL ME MORE: While it's an open secret that The Monkees - at least at first - didn't play their own instruments, it's less well known that artists ranging from Elvis Presley ("Viva Las Vegas") to The Byrds ("Mr. Tambourine Man") to Nancy Sinatra ("These Boots Were Made for Walking") all got musical first aid from a recurring group of crack session players, including drummer Hal Blaine, guitarist T...

  • Everybody liked him, though, even judges. And [Denzel Washington] has no trouble playing likable. But the psychotic violence seems tacked on, not integrated into the character, as it was in, say, Tony Soprano. And we don't know much more about [Lucas] at the end than we did at the beginning. Likewise, [Russell Crowe]'s Roberts does the Serpico thing, but we never get a sense of why he stays clean while the rest of the force wallows in mud. Director Ridley Scott keeps everything dark and moody, the better to court Oscar's favor. But this is no Godfather or The Departed; it's too inert. The scenes don't link up and build. When Al Pacino and Robert De Niro finally had their tête-à-tête toward the end of Heat, it meant something. When Washington and Crowe finally have theirs, what it means,...

  • The United States Copyright Office (``Office'') seeks comments on proposals to exempt certain classes of works from the prohibition on circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works. The Office has initiated a rulemaking proceeding in accordance with provisions added by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (``DMCA'') which provide that the Librarian of Congress (``Librarian''), upon the recommendation of the Register of Copyrights, may exempt certain classes of works from the prohibition against circumvention. The purpose of this proceeding is to determine whether there are particular classes of works as to which users are, or are likely to be, adversely affected in their ability to make noninfringing uses due to the prohibition on circumvention. • Although Michael Moore will not take home an Oscar for best documentary this award season, having opted not to submit "Fahrenheit 9/11" in the documentary category, his film has been selected to receive top honors from the International Documentary Association. The IDA announced Thursday that "Fahrenheit" is sharing its award in the feature documentary category with Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman's "Born Into Brothels," a study of the children of prostitutes in Calcutta.

  • Last year, in an effort to address the need for guidance in the use of disclosure materials in international arbitration, the author formed the American Arbitration Association (AAA) Task Force on Exchange of Documentary and Electronic Materials. The Task Force developed a comprehensive set of guidelines on "information exchanges" in international arbitration practice. These guidelines are now in effect and apply to cases filed after May 31, 2008, with the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), the AAA's international division. The ICDR is the first organization to develop comprehensive guidance on the exchange of information in international dispute resolution proceedings, which have the goal of expediting the process and saving the parties time and money.

  • Taking aim at the Obama administration's economic record, a new documentary is looking to ride a wave of government resentment to the unusual heights of blockbuster status. Think "Fahrenheit 9/11," Michael Moore's liberal documentary that dovetailed with Americans' shrinking approval of President George W. Bush and growing alarm over the Iraq war, but for the nation's center-right voters.
