DETROIT, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Stressing the importance of growing jobs, commerce and trade, an all-star line-up of leaders from Michigan and Canadian business and labor, city and the state governments together today urged Michigan lawmakers to remove the only remaining hurdle to the new Detroit River International Crossing -- enactment of legislation that would enable Michigan to enter into a public-private partnership to build and operate the new bridge. The facts are straightforward. Development of the DRIC will force the condemnation of 170 acres of land in Delray and result in the destruction of over 400 homes, five churches and several parks and historic properties. And if the area's economic conditions couldn't get worse, the DRIC will also force the relocation of 43 businesses and hundreds of jobs. Gone with the DRIC would be any hope for the rebirth of Delray, the neighborhood where I lived for 12 years. So where does Southwest Detroit's State Representative Rashida Tlaib stand on the issue? She argues straight-faced that the project will not create a significant negative environmental impact and has stood up as one of the DRIC's most vocal supporters. Plans for a new Peace Bridge and larger inspections plaza on the Buffalo side of the international crossing were officially scrapped Tuesday, formalizing what bridge officials announced last summer. The move by the Federal Highway Administration -- canceling the environmental review for the project, which began Oct. 9, 2001 -- officially puts to bed what had been lofty plans subject to a decade of fierce public debate.
