The United Nations' International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo last Oct. 1994 showed that the conflict over abortion and contraception was not the issue. Fertility rates can be stabilized by enriching the people through economic freedom and growth.

Conference on Human Rights, held in Vienna, and the 1995 World Summit for Social Development, held in Copenhagen, feminist activists were successful for the first time in placing women's rights on the international human rights agenda and women's poverty on the international development agenda. Women's movements were also influential at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Cairo, and the United Nations 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing, conferences in which Peruvian feminists were active participants.

The United Nation's International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) managed to achieve consensus between 179 countries on a program to deal with population explosion. When ICPD met in 1999 as a follow up to the original meeting in 1994, there were serious disagreements voiced by some Catholics and Muslims that nearly derailed the whole effort.
