This paper examines the impact on earnings for those who had previously served in the U.S. Armed Forces. While it is well known that additional education leads to higher earnings, the question addressed here is whether military experience can also lead to higher average earnings. Are there other things that are learned while in the military that are valued by private employers? Specifically, are the values taught by the military later rewarded in the private sector? The answer appears to be yes for those persons with a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree. And this premium holds for both Whites and African-Americans and across age groups.

Registration is closed for the "1st International Conference on Afro-Hispanic Studies Across The Disciplines." But the organizers of the event-Dr. Yaw Agawu-Kakraba of Pennsylvania State University and Dr. Komla Aggor of John Carroll University-say they are still accepting papers for Ghana's first-ever conference on issues related to Africa and people of African ancestry in the Spanish-speaking world. Dr. Agawu-Kakraba explained in an interview that he and Dr. Aggor each studied Spanish at the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra. "I had studied French in high school," Agawu-Kakraba said. A GOOD THING BY BING When famed local artist and educator Bing Davis was selected as one of 30 U.S. art education delegates to the U.S./Russia International Conference on Education, he made a promise to his assigned school, St. Petersburg's C.K. Grot School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Davis vowed that he and his brother, photographer John Joseph Davis of California, would sponsor an annual award for students at Grot School. The first such awards were presented May 23 to Vladimir Babaitsev, a baritone singer who is blind; and Alexander Golintovsky, a visually impaired student who was recognized for exceptional achievements in swimming.
