POMONA - Landscape architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona recently received five awards, more than any other university, in the 2008 Student Awards competition of the American Society of Landscape Architecture.
In the international competition, Cal Poly outperformed institutions such as the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and Cornell University Department of Landscape Architecture, according to the university's Web site.

Ryan Salvas has given new meaning to living near the highway and in so doing has won an international competition in architecture design. Salvas, 23, is a 2001 graduate of Old Saybrook High School and fifth-year senior architecture student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. Along with a classmate, Stephanie Cramer of Castleton, N.Y., he recently won first place in the Global House 2005 International Design Competition held in Lima, Peru, for the design of a house suspended from a highway overpass.

A BOORA Architects project that converted an abandoned hospital into adidas' corporate headquarters has been recognized as one of five winners of the Urban Land Institute's Global Awards for Excellence competition.
The international awards recognize the complete development process of a project in addition to its architecture or design. The awards' criteria included community contributions, public/private partnership, environmental stewardship and financial success.

Choice's Cambria Suites spreads out
Choice Hotels International Inc. of Silver Spring, announced plans for new Cambria Suites hotels in White Plains, N.Y.; Washington, D.C.; and Houston. Meyer Jabara Hotels, a Danbury, Conn.- based hospitality company, is building a 130-room Cambria Suites in White Plains as part of a $47 million mixed-use development. In Washington, Concord Hospitality Enterprises of Raleigh, N.C., and D.C.-based Roadside Development LLC are partnering to erect a 182- room Cambria Suites as part of CityMarket at O, a $300 million mixed- use development located by the D.C. Convention Center. Concord Hospitality also is developing a 127-room Cambria Suites near the Houston airport.
