• Americas U18 Female Event Set for Springs

Another major international basketball tournament is coming to Colorado Springs. The national governing body for basketball is expected to announce today that the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women, an eight-country tournament that has served as a springboard to the Olympics, will be held June 23-27 at the Olympic Training Center.

• B'ball Tourney to Benefit Needy

APPLE CREEK -- Fairlawn Mennonite Church, 8520 Emerson Road, will be host for a 3-on-3 men and boys basketball tournament April 1-2. All proceeds will benefit The Reckoning International, to help the needy in poverty stricken areas. Each team is guaranteed three games; there is a maximum four players per team. Registration deadline is March 26 and cost is $50 per team (make checks payable to Fairlawn Mennonite Church and write The Reckoning in memo line). Brackets will be drawn up on March 28.

WILLIAMSBURG - Basketball Hall of Fame coach passed peacefully from this life March 25, 2008. He was born, Bernard Louis Carnevale in Raritan, N.J., Oct. 30, 1915, the son of Alexander and Amelia Carnevale. He had a lifetime impact on the sport of basketball. His dad took him to his first game in 1921 and that started a lifelong involvement. Ben was involved in collegiate athletics from the 1930s as a member of the 1935 national championship New York University basketball team. He played in the first National Invitational Basketball Tournament in Madison Square Garden in 1938. KANKAKEE - Daniel Howerton led six players in double figures with 19 points as Calvary Baptist Academy topped Kankakee Trinity, 90- 56, Saturday in the third-place game of the Association of Christian Schools International East Regional Basketball Tournament.
