HOUSTON, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Congressmen Pete Olson, R- Sugar Land, and Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, promised to fight the Gulf of Mexico drilling moratorium, rallying nearly 300 at a July 7 town hall meeting called by the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC). While the moratorium may make for good politics, it constitutes bad economics. Less domestic drilling and production will mean greater reliance on imports that, in turn, could reverse our recent progress in reducing the trade deficit. In addition, thousands of high-paying domestic jobs in the oil and gas industry will be put at risk, at least temporarily. The International Association of Drilling Contractors estimates up to 10,000 rig jobs could be lost..
The oil industry plaintiffs who convinced a federal judge to issue a stay on President Obama's deepwater drilling moratorium have company. And while the show of support is largely symbolic, it marks a growing opposition to the administration's decision to stop exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. The International Association of Drilling Contractors has filed an amicus brief supporting resumption of deepwater drilling with the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. That court has a hearing scheduled Thursday to consider the Obama administration's appeal of Judge Martin Feldman's ruling.
