Berman (Democrat-California), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today [9 December 2009] sent a bipartisan letter to President Obama signed by 189 members of Congress requesting a robust International Affairs budget, which includes funding for bilateral diplomacy; international broadcasting; contributions to the United Nations; and humanitarian, development, and security assistance. Additionally, programs funded in the International Affairs budget foster the development of sound economic policies in poor countries, protect intellectual property rights, build vibrant trade relationships, and encourage public-private partnerships.
Makeba L. Clay has been appointed executive director of diversity and equal opportunity by the College of Southern Maryland. In light of the president's recently submitted budget for fiscal year 2006, a review of the wisdom of investments in international- affairs programs is timely. With respect to the enormity of global challenges America faces today, that same analysis is vital. The Asian tsunami crisis and the related rescue and recovery efforts provided an extraordinary window into the important role played by the U.S. international-affairs budget.
