MARTINSBURG - Up to 170 Internal Revenue Service jobs in Berkeley County could be cut - and as many open or new positions filled - as part of a national effort to standardize services and increase efficiency, an IRS official says. Officials have notified the National Treasury Employees Union that a target date of Sept. 30, 2005, has been made for the job force reduction, said Terry Lemons, an IRS senior spokesman.
Six biotech firms in Southwest Virginia have received federal grants through a program designed to make the United States more competitive in biological sciences. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 provided that grants be given to firms with "significant potential to produce new and cost-saving therapies, support jobs and increase U.S. competitiveness," according to the Internal Revenue Service, which is helping allocate $1 billion in grants and tax credits for the government's Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project.
MINNEAPOLIS, June 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- ACA International, the Association of Credit and Collections Professionals (ACA), today called on Congress to reject a last-ditch attempt by Representative Steve Rothman (D-N.J.) to tie the hands of the Internal Revenue Service as it seeks to collect against a $290 billion backlog of unpaid taxes. By passing the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 with strong bipartisan support, Congress granted the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) authority to work with private companies to more efficiently recover past due taxes. The IRS is already moving ahead with these contracts, with implementation expected later this year.
Using linked administrative data from program and earnings records, we summarize the 2007 employment rates of working-age (18–64) Social Security disability program beneficiaries at the national and state levels, as well as changes in employment since 1996. Substantial variation exists within the population. Disability Insurance beneficiaries and those younger than age 40 were much more likely to work relative to other Social Security beneficiaries. There are also strong regional differences in the employment rates among disability beneficiaries of working age, and these differences are persistent over time.

WASHINGTON -- The Internal Revenue Service announced plans Wednesday to cut around 2,400 jobs, mostly clerical, but said it would add nearly as many new positions to go after tax cheats. The effect of the changes on the IRS center in Ogden was not immediately clear. However, the IRS did say it plans to consolidate audit processing and collection work being done at 92 different locations to four centers in Memphis, Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Ogden. The move will create about 350 enforcement positions, the IRS said.
S. Rep. John Linder, R-Ga., wants to get rid of the Internal Revenue Service and all federal income taxes. If that happens, he already has Border Patrol jobs lined up for the IRS.
The Internal Revenue Service is accepting applications for hundreds of new jobs. In January, the agency expects to hire about 500 tax enforcement personnel in 70 cities, including Salt Lake City.
Background During his years working in jobs that included internal auditor at a multinational bank and tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service, Jake Young dreamed of having his own business. He first considered starting an import/export business, then looked into owning a restaurant franchise. But when negotiations with the franchise operation fell through, Young decided it was better to go it alone.
WASHINGTON - The Maine congressional delegation Tuesday expressed concern that an Internal Revenue Service proposal to increase efficiency and rein in cost has the potential to threaten jobs and service in Maine and around the country. Under the IRS' current plan, nearly 1,600 employees at 92 IRS locations across the country, including its Bangor and Augusta offices, could be effected. As we understand it, the IRS plans to lay off roughly 1,600 Case Processing and Insolvency support employees in 92 locations - including 4 employees in the Bangor and Augusta, Maine IRS offices - and hire 1,200 new employees to do the same work in four consolidated sites in Ohio, Utah, Pennsylvania and Tennessee," the delegation wrote in a letter to IRS Commissioner Mark Everson.
