WASHINGTON - President Obama once promised that negotiations over his health-care overhaul would be carried out openly, in front of TV cameras and microphones. Tell that to the White House now.
Republican congressional investigators got the brush-off this past week after pressing for details of meetings between White House officials and interest groups, including drug companies and hospitals that provided critical backing for Obama's health insurance expansion.

Lately it feels like the whole country is angry. There is an undercurrent of seething, and the least little thing seems to ignite reactions that are far out of proportion to perceived offenses.
Democrats are angry with Republicans, Republicans are angry with Democrats, Democratic special interest groups are angry with President Obama for not moving fast enough on his promises, and Republicans are angry that the president is moving too fast.

As noteworthy as were former President Ronald Reagan's fiscal policies, the quality that most distinguished him from President Obama was his disdain for dividing Americans into interest groups to be herded into his camp when convenient and pitted against each other when useful ("Remembering 'Morning in America,' " Commentary, Thursday).
While Reagan held strong beliefs, he also understood that he was president of all Americans, even those who disagreed with him. When he had to fight political battles, he was a happy warrior, not a vindictive one. Mr. Obama gives the impression that his role is to cater to those interest groups with which he's aligned, and the devil take the rest. Is it any wonder that scorned constituencies are up in arms? Make the numbers work, by all means - but Ameri...

WASHINGTON, March 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- African American and Hispanic leaders tonight sharply criticized the Obama Administration's official announcement opposing the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, a highly successful school voucher initiative serving low-income children in the District of Columbia. The following is a statement from Kevin P. Chavous, the chairman of the Black Alliance for Educational Options, and Julio Fuentes, the president of the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options:
President Barack Obama's opposition to the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program is hypocritical and it is wrong. If President Obama continues his fight against school choice and education reform, history will long remember him as someone who failed to stand up to richly funded sp...

With "only" 581 days remaining until Election Day 2012, the next presidential campaign is very much under way after President Obama filed official re-election papers Monday.
That translates into speeches, primaries, fundraising, conventions, debates and all the hoopla surrounding a national campaign -- even if New York's deep blue hue probably means Democrats and Republicans alike will once again shun this part of the world and concentrate on truly competitive states.

There is, it turns out, something more galling than teachers unions fighting against proposals that would improve education for students in the worst-performing schools. At least the teachers unions are, presumably, acting in the economic self-interest of their members.
What's more galling is that civil rights groups would oppose Obama administration initiatives to improve failing schools - initiatives that hold the greatest promise for the same minority students whose interests these groups purport to represent. And that the basis for their opposition is the claim that the initiatives are unfair to minority and low-income students.

WASHINGTON, March 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A "multi- stakeholder process" to develop online privacy codes advocated today by the Obama Administration runs the risk of being dominated by industry and failing to protect consumers if it is not organized in a fair and balanced manner, six public interest groups warned.
The groups include Consumer Watchdog, The Center for Digital Democracy, Consumer Federation of America, Consumer Action, U.S. PIRG and the World Privacy Forum.
