WASHINGTON, Dec. 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Comprehensive analysis to determine exactly what happened in the New Orleans hurricane and flood protection system during Hurricane Katrina is the mission of the Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET). Established by the Chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the IPET is comprised of some of the nation's leading engineers and scientists from government (federal, state and local agencies), academia and private industry. The IPET analysis teams are all co-lead by representatives from independent organizations and personnel from the Corps. These experts will use some of the most advanced research tools, including laboratory testing and numerical and physical models, in their comprehensive study.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Relocated residents of the greater New Orleans area who stayed during Hurricane Katrina and personally witnessed flooding due to levee overtopping or floodwall breaching before relocating are asked to provide information, photos, and any other related data to the Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET). This information will assist with IPET's efforts to provide engineering answers to questions about the performance of the New Orleans hurricane and flood protection system during Hurricane Katrina. Since September, IPET team members have been gathering data in the New Orleans area, including eyewitness accounts, related to the hurricane protection system and the impacts from Hurricane Katrina. To expand this fact gathering effort, IPE...

Authorities evacuated an elementary school in Bullhead City, Ariz., after a grenade was discovered in the backpack of a 9-year-old pupil. "It was a real grenade, but it wasn't dangerous because it had been deactivated," Public Information Officer Emily Montague said, noting all the explosive material had been emptied out of the grenade, which the boy's parents had bought at a garage sale. "He just brought it to show his friends. NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans should increase the strength of new levees being built to protect against catastrophic hurricanes, elevate more houses and abandon neighborhoods that rest below sea level, an independent research panel said Friday. Levees under construction by the Army Corps of Engineers aren't being built to a high-enough flood protection standard, said the report by the National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council.
