HSNi, a broad-based retailer, owns and operates an interactive lifestyle network (HSN), a television network, print catalogs, as well as an Internet site to support its business-to-consumer business model. It had until August 2008 been apart of IAC/InterActiveCorp. However, at that time it along with Cornerstone were spun-off as a separate company. This case focuses on the strategic implications of this spin-off which occurred during some of the most troubling times for the retail industry. The first private employer and third tenant to occupy the new Whitewater Innovation Center has signed a three-year lease for approximately 780 square feet. Blackthorne Capital Management is a financial start-up company focused on research and development, and employs 11 students and six UW-Whitewater faculty members partnered with the company. Other tenants include Jefferson Eastern Dane Interactive Network, a virtual classroom and distance-learning business, and Cooperative Education Service Agency 2, an educational service agency.
