An analysis was conducted to explain why altruistic parents prefer late bequests over earlier inter vivos gifts, as well as whether or not they ought to leave rather equal bequests to their children even when the children end up with different incomes. It was shown that, when there is asymmetric information between parents and children and the children's incomes depend in part on their effort, postponing bequests is a way to reduce moral hazard.

A revocable inter vivos trust created by a husband is property subject to the surviving wife's statutory share, the Iowa Supreme Court has ruled.
The husband created the trust and transferred farmland, all of his personal effects, vehicles and tools into it. He married a few years later. After his death, his wife elected not to take under his will, and sought to include the assets of the trust as property subject to her statutory share under Iowa state law.
