This is the third year we have attempted to cultivate rhubarb, and our first year to have success. Rhubarb is a weird plant. There is actually some conflict over whether it's a fruit or a vegetable. Traditionally, it's a vegetable, but functionally, it's used as a fruit. A court in New York in 1947 determined it to be a fruit for all intents and purposes, so you can call it a fruit if you want to. Or a vegetable, if you dare, since it really is one. Except not legally. It would make a good argument! Rhubarb looks and feels a lot like celery. It has long, reddish- green crispy stalks, which are edible. The leaves are toxic. Don't eat 'em! My wife and several of my friends are members of the Black Rose Acoustic Society, which, for all intents and purposes, is a cult. They have their own language (involving frets and tunings), their own fashion sense (my beard isn't nearly long enough), their own handshakes. Playoff hockey isn't set to begin officially for the Washington Capitals until April 13 or shortly thereafter. At that point players will start growing their beards, and the life and death of a season will be measured in seven-game increments. But for all intents and purposes, the playoffs have already begun.
