Pension plan providers are surveyed to learn about the latest innovations in 401(k) financial instruments. The findings show 401(k) plan developers are compelled to add innovative features to their products because they want to increase plan participation and to cater to the special needs of some groups such as high-salaried employees. A growing number of companies are providing 401(k) pension plans with unusual features. Among them are Flagstar Corp., whose pension plan is customized; Gillette Co., with its special plan for highly compensated employees; Pillsbury, whose profit sharing and 401(k) plans are integrated; and Providian Corp., whose pension plan is made unique by its lack of a hardship provision and by the Providian employee stock ownership plan.
