The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America is hailing as progress Bobby Jindal winning the governor's race and Jim Donelon's re-election as insurance commissioner.
The group pledged to work with the governor-elect and Donelon to heighten insurance competition in Louisiana, which has languished since the 2005 hurricane season. With major insurers such as Allstate and State Farm no longer writing new homeowner policies with wind and hail coverage in storm-affected areas, the burden has been precariously shifted to Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp., the state-run insurer of last resort.

It became apparent Wednesday just how far apart the Maryland Hospital Association and insurers are when it comes to how much the state's hospitals should be allowed to charge.
At a Health Cost Services Review Commission meeting, representatives of insurance companies said they would prefer no increase in the annually adjusted base hospital rates. The hospital association on the other hand requested an increase of 2.9 percent over rates from fiscal 2009.
