Flying in terminal airspace - at FWA that is the area within approximately 55 miles of the airport and below 17,000 feet - pilots navigate using air highway maps via a combination of ground-based radar with air traffic controllers and internal instrumentation linked to ground radios, such as instrument landing systems (ILS). According to the FAA, enough data from early demonstrations show that with NexGen systems and technologies, flight delays will be reduced by 35 to 40 percent, saving about one billion gallons of fuel.

Pilots of small airplanes have long flown beneath the radar and out of touch with air-traffic controllers along the Hudson River in New York City, where a plane and helicopter collided Saturday, killing nine.
