Ken Good and a group of instructors have formed Strategos International to continue propagating and developing tactical skills in the low light environment. The current program is "Strategies of " and it is a 40-plus hour instructor program. The particular course reviewed was conducted at the federally funded Regional Training Center in Sioux City IA.

This paper describes the creation of an on-line leadership course that retained as much of the rich, interactive nature of the face-to-face version as possible. The seven "best practice" design criteria offered by Chickering and Reisser (1993) are discussed as they relate to specific course design and instructional requirements for instructor orientation, course management organization and tool use, community building as well as the development of thematic modules and their associated assignments. Student comments provided by a case study of the on-line course (Griffin, 2007) are provided that support the efficacy of this approach.

This research investigated the relation of course, instructor, and student characteristics to student ratings of teaching effectiveness, both overall and within the dimensions of pedagogical skill, rapport with students, difficulty appropriateness, and course value/learning. Interest in the course content, expected grades, satisfaction with the time of day, and instructor sex were related significantly to all dimensions of teaching performance. Year in school and reason for taking a course were related to value ratings, and student sex and year in school were related to rapport ratings. Relations of background characteristics to teaching evaluations varied somewhat by dimension. The class discussed the difference in basic flashlight design, from the traditional body switch flashlights (switch on the side) to the newer tail cap switch (switch on the end) lights. The ice-pick grip refers to holding the flashlight in your fist with the light pointing down out of your hand opposite your palm and is used more for tail cap switch style flashlights.
