Physical inactivity is a major contributing factor to prevalence of obesity and diabetes along the Texas-Mexico Border. Walking has been identified as a popular activity, but appropriate distances are seldom attained. This investigation was performed to evaluate self-monitored pedometer use, stage of change movement, and psychosocial mediators using walking as the physical activity. Seventy students enrolled in university kinesiology activity classes (age 22.53 ± 4.5, percent M/F 8/92) volunteered to wear pedometers for nine weeks and record weekly step averages. Weekly step averages were compared with an ANOVA and psychometric variables were analyzed with MANOVA. Participants completed pre- and post-intervention survey packets containing scales measuring exercise behavior change, barri...

Choosing a graduate (masters and doctoral) program of study at an ideal institution is probably one of the most important decisions students and their family will make. The graduate college selection involves identifying the most critical academic and non-academic factors, and weighing their importance against the large quantity of choices available. The following study evaluated the knowledge, experience and attitudes, that faculty at a private four-year institution have towards students with disabilities. The 208 participants responded to a survey questionnaire. The findings of the study indicated that many of the faculty had little or no contact with this particular student population. Many had no experience working with these students and were less willing to accommodate them. Yet, others indicated a high willingness to accommodate in specific areas (i.e., extended exam time, etc.) In addition, a number of the faculty were unaware of the DSS office's existence and had little knowledge of their services. As a result of this study, the DSS office is implementing a faculty education component to its website and additional dissemina...

A scaled-down plan for expansion of the University at Buffalo was proposed Monday by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and state university officials -- a recognition of the geographic political challenges of getting the UB-only effort through the Legislature.
The governor offered what he called the NYSUNY 2020 package, which would make up to $35 million apiece in capital money available this year to Buffalo and the other three SUNY campus centers at Binghamton, Stony Brook and Albany.

AUBURN -- The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA is taking a leap of faith.
Its first splash came on Sept. 14, when the century-old institution bought a wide, 93-acre tract of woods and fields overlooking the Androscoggin River. Two weeks later, leaders announced plans to build a complex on the property, with a pool, child-care facilities, fitness areas, a day camp and far more parking than its aging center in Auburn's downtown.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Evansville Psychiatric Children's Center is uniquely positioned as the only state-run institution in Southwestern Indiana that provides intensive, full-time care for children who suffer from serious mental illness.
But the children's center also has become the state-run institution with the highest per-patient cost per day and the lowest occupancy rate.
