This brave new world of electronic communication has multiplied the avenues for the boorish to harass the innocent. That development is forcing courts to apply local harassment statutes to situations the drafters may not have anticipated.
Take the case of Alex C., a New Hampshire lad who faced harassment charges based on an instant messaging exchange with the mother of a friend.

Before the Web, social searching could have been called simply "asking your friends a question." But social searches in the digital age harness the power of online networks to help you find the best answers more efficiently. Answers, where anyone can ask and answer questions on any topic, and JustAnswer, where people pay experts for answers. Aardvark was founded in San Francisco in 2007. A series of beta releases in 2009 made the service available via email, AOL's Instant Messenger, Twitter, and iPhone. Aardvark reports that most questions are answered within 5 minutes, and the vast maj...

I have experience: In school sometimes instead of using the word "people," I'll use the word "ppl" (which means people in text messaging). But it's not just spelling, it's grammar and punctuation too. I'm so used to not capitalizing my "I" when I'm talking about myself that I've actually written it that way in class. So the next time I'm on Instant Messenger, I'll try to use the right words, no matter how long it takes to type.
