I enjoyed your recent column about ladybugs. I have six tropical hibiscuses that I bring in the house for the winter. I spray them with the hose before bringing them in and then spray them all winter with soap , canola oil and insecticide. This still doesn't keep the aphids under control.
Is it possible to use ladybugs to keep the aphids under control over the winter? And if I did, would I need gentlemen bugs to make baby bugs?

-- One problem you may encounter when saving plants is tiny hitchhikers. Insects and other creatures that are now dormant outside suddenly come to life when you bring the plants inside.
Carefully spray the foliage-salvaged plants with a strong stream of water, insecticidal soap or another approved insecticide. Never save plants that are infested with whiteflies or spider mites as these will quickly spread to all of your houseplants.

There are a number of household products that most homeowners have that are very effective in controlling pests. Most are very safe, but I always recommend keeping all foreign material away from children and pets.
Borax is commonly used as a cleanser. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and is also an effective insecticide. You can control mold, odor, ants, fleas, spiders, roaches and even termites in some situations with Borax. Just mop or spray floors, any voids or sill boxes, the back of furniture, around appliances and other areas where you see pests. You will be surprised how effective it is.
