  • Denmark's rise to innovation leadership seems more impressive than ever. Danish companies play leadership roles in industries such as enzymatic processes, oil recovery, bio-fuels, and clean-tech. Given the structural disincentives that Denmark presents to entrepreneurial activity, it's interesting that these companies are such leaders. Still, Denmark suffers from a lack of natural resources and must rely on innovation if it hopes to have a healthy economy. The European Innovation Scoreboard 2007 , published in February 2008, indicates that Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and the UK are the most innovative EU countries and ahead of the US. It's all part of a plan: The Innovation Denmark 2007?2010 plan, which is Denmark's national strategy and action plan for promotion of innovation an...

  • The US, European Union and Japan accounted for 95% of the R&D expenditure by the world's top 1,400 R&D-investing companies in 2007/2008, and both the US and EU groups of companies increased R&D spending faster than the Japanese group. Moreover, companies that performed a substantial fraction of their R&D in facilities outside their home countries appeared to show above-average business performance. These are among the highlights of two newly published R&D Scoreboards. The first was the EU Industrial R&D Scoreboard. The second was the Booz & Co Global Innovation 1000. The EU Scoreboard provides the largest available compilation of R&D, Capex and financial data for 2,000 global companies which they can use to benchmark their own company's R&D investment...

  • Like an earlier 2004 study, Global Innovation found no statistical relationship between R&D spending and sales growth, earnings or shareholder returns. Nevertheless, the Financial Times observed in its Nov 13, 2006 issue that the Booz Allen Hamilton findings may only deepen the debate over the effectiveness of R&D spending because they appear to contradict the conclusions of the latest R&D Scoreboard from the UK Department of Trade and Industry. The 2004, 2005 and 2006 Scoreboards all report a clear relationship between R&D growth and sales growth for global technology hardware and software companies. Companies succeed consistently by making good strategic choices, demonstrating operational excellence and making wise and balanced investments which include R&D. The ma...

  • Innovation strategy helps a company in three ways: exciting its customers, outperforming competitors, and building a new product portfolio. The literature describes many frameworks for innovation strategy but offers little detail about how to implement them. This paper identifies 12 ways of visualizing innovation strategies: platform offering, co-creation, cycle time reduction, brand value enhancement, technology leveraging, future-proofing, lean development, partnering, innovation mutation, creative destruction, market segmentation, and acquisition. These strategies allow 100 leading global companies to dominate their markets and outperform the competition through innovation.

  • How to achieve a sustained competitive advantage that ensures long-term survival is a major concern for managers everywhere, but even more so for those in smaller firms, which may have more difficulty enduring under hostile environmental conditions than larger organizations. Because innovation is a key driver of sustained competitive advantage and sustainable business growth, the management of innovation is a central concern for these firms. While research in innovation management has provided many insights into specific aspects of innovation, the encompassing problems confronting general managers, especially managers of small and medium-size firms, have been overlooked in the development of innovation management tools. As a case study in the value of innovation management techniques an...

  • In recent months as political and economic events have unfolded within Europe, the EU has come to resemble a recalcitrant beast loath to embrace much-needed economic and structural reforms in order to carve a niche for itself in the globally networked economy. In 2000 in Lisbon, Portugal, the European Council announced its Lisbon Strategy, which declared the EU would become "the world's most dynamic and competitive economy" by 2010. At the heart of the Lisbon Strategy is the concept of transforming Europe into a knowledge-based economy, with sectors such as high-tech, services, software, telecommunications and research centers becoming key drivers for economic growth and productivity. In an effort to counter some of the criticisms leveled at the Lisbon Strategy, the EC notes in its 2006...
