EDWARDSVILLE - An aspiring rapper was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison over a 2007 money-demanding note that threatened a Virginia Tech-like killing spree, failing to convince a judge the writing was innocent lyrics and other musings.
A barely audible Olutosin Oduwole insisted in court that he "did not mean to incite fear.

Tribute albums rarely live up to ingenuity of the music being celebrated. The difference on "Rave On Buddy Holly" is that Holly's innocent, straightforward lyrics and simple melodies have a timeless quality that makes them ripe for reinvention.
Of course, reworking cultural icons is risky. Modest Mouse's quirky arrangement on "That'll Be the Day" fights the song, while Lou Reed's version of "Peggy Sue" seems leaden. Paul McCartney - who owns the rights to Holly's song catalog - rocks too earnestly on "It's So Easy." By contrast, The Black Keys don't fight the odd tempo on "Dearest"; They strip it down, embracing the song's oddities.

Far from it. Rather than bow down to the purity or uniqueness of their sources, they revel in the absurdity of four fresh-faced Columbia grads in button-down shirts and sensible shoes coming up with a tune like "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," which uses the rhythm and melody of Congolese dance music to celebrate the Ivy League version of summer lovin'. Clearly, it's not entirely innocent stuff. Lyrics like "All your diction dripping with disdain/Through the pain/I always tell the truth" from the frothy-yet-withering "Oxford Comma" demonstrate that pleasant, thoughtful lead mouth Ezra Koenig feels no compunction about baring his fangs. (Or getting even.)

Although her songs are laced with innocent lyrics and subtle vibrato, young Ingrid Michaelson's achievements are anything but modest. The New York based indie-pop singer and songwriter will perform Thursday as part of the Thursday at the Square Concert Series in Lafayette Square. Although she has not yet signed with any major record label, her lucid and gentle tunes draw large crowds.
Michaelson, whose best-known song may be "The Way I Am," can credit much of her success to her exposure on Old Navy commercials and television shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "One Tree Hill." In 2007, she won a national songwriting contest sponsored by Mountain Stage, a two-hour international radio program. Michaelson also has appeared on various talk shows and opened for Jason Mraz's European ...

Although [Jonathan Butler] seems more focused on the plucking of his acoustic guitar, which makes the album more delicate and grown-up, he still has the solid, rich voice that persuaded women to fall in love with him way back when he sang "Sarah" and "Lies." On "Baby Love," finding love is innocent again. Words like "shine your love on me" are quintessential Butler lyrics, glazed over breezy music and a delicate tambourine.

Booties are shaking. Legs are bending, and pelvises thumping provocatively. An F-bomb that was supposed to be edited from the rap lyrics slips out of the speakers.
This isn't little Suzie's innocent dance recital, but Hickman High School's Hip Hop Dance Team rehearsal is giving at-risk kids a way to express themselves and keeping them off the streets, said Chris DeLong, a Hickman special education teacher who co-sponsors the team.

The Feelies remain rock's worst-kept best-kept secret.
Even if you haven't heard this North Haledon-based indie band, you've probably heard of them: from rock critics in Rolling Stone, The New York Times and The Village Voice ("the best underground band in New York"), and from bigger fish like R.E.M., who have cited them as a major influence. You may have even seen them in the movies: Director Jonathan Demme featured them onscreen in "Something Wild" and on the soundtrack of "Married to the Mob.

Do you know what's on your teenager's iPod? Do you remember what was in your high-school album collection? Do you remember struggling to grow up? Have you gotten there yet?
When I answer these questions, I come up with "Yes," "Yes," "Yes," and "No, but I'm closer in some ways, and in other ways I still don't want to.

Forget that! David Barker couldn't resist appealing for memorabilia of his old band, "Mad Andy and The Crawdads."

Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish have taken the genre back to its innocent Sugar Hill Gang roots. The Cool Kids' down-tempo raps are set against starkly simple electronic beats. Their lyrics are neither enlightened nor street-fighter tough. If anything, those lyrics reveal the Cool Kids' silly side, feeding off non-profound chorus lines like, "I'm Mikey, I rock.
