Nancy Niedzielski, left, looks on June 7 in Woodinville as Debra Chaput of Kirkland signs a petition in support of an initiative that would allow physicians to help terminally ill patients end their lives. Niedzielski's husband, Randy, died of brain cancer in 2006. The campaign has gathered more than 320,000 signatures.
In February 2006, a month after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Oregon Death With Dignity Act, right-to-die activists from Seattle and Portland met at an east Vancouver hotel to lay the groundwork for a Washington initiative modeled on the Oregon law.

Out-of-state money is pouring into the campaigns both for and against Washington Initiative 1000, the measure known by supporters as death with dignity and by opponents as physician-assisted suicide.
The campaign has turned bitter in recent weeks over the role that out-of-state interests, including the Roman Catholic Church, are playing in the debate over a physician "aid-in-dying" law in Washington.

It's hard to understand
To the editor -- Logic has never been one of the average American citizen's strong points (e.g. why do we listen to candidates for president speak, when both are U.S. senators and we can check their voting records and see what they actually believe, instead of what they say they believe. But I digress.). Therefore, I should not be surprised that people think Initiative 1000 will fail, while a large majority of Washington voters say they are for abortion rights.

Kevin Myles, clinical manager of Southwest Washington Medical Centers home hospice care program, says some doctors feel Initiative 1000 will create a negative perception of their care.
A Washington law giving terminally ill patients the option of ending their lives was met with opposition among Clark County physicians, who fear it will undermine their care.

By all outward signs, the medical community in Washington state is not sufficiently organized and prepared to activate Washingtons Death With Dignity Act more than three months after its Nov. 4 approval by voters. For the most part, doctors are not trained to participate, counseling is not set up, and some health organizations are still deciding whether to participate.
The new law which provides a tool of mercy for those in severe pain with no hope of recovery will take effect in Washington in less than a month, on March 4. Voter approval of Initiative 1000 was overwhelming: 58 percent.
