CAS Medical Systems Inc. gained Food and Drug Administration approval Wednesday for its next-generation monitor for brain blood oxygenation, and its stock soared 27 percent. The stock, listed as CASM, returned to the Nasdaq Smallcap Market Dec. 15 after seven years of trading over the counter. It closed Wednesday at $8.55 a share, up $1.80.
CAS develops medical monitoring equipment for blood pressure, vital signs, neonatal care and apnea. The latest device, called Near Infrared Spectroscopy Adult Cerebral Oximeter, will use light to measure oxygen in blood. The goal is a noninvasive monitor during high-risk surgery, such as cardiac bypass procedures, to help avoid neurological damage.

The payload was an instrument that may give researchers answers about some of the most vexing problems in science, questions about global warming.
The device was a prototype infrared sensor built by Utah State University's Space Dynamics Laboratory, Logan. Called the Far- Infrared Spectroscopy of the Troposphere Instrument, it was three years in the building.
