  • News Advisory: On April 18-20, at the Georgia State Archives, the Council of State Archivists (CoSA) will convene nine southeastern states that were most affected by hurricanes to confront the challenges of emergency preparedness in their archives. The conference, made possible through a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, will include representatives from the National Archives, FEMA, state emergency management and information technology personnel, preservation organizations, professional associations, and funding agencies to review the state of emergency preparedness and adopt a framework for emergency planning and response.

  • Although Forbes recently named Cleveland the most miserable city in the US, the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) found it to be a delightful spot for its 24th annual conference. About 120 people attended, mostly from North America, but other attendees hailed from Australia, Italy, Panama, and the UK. AIIP chose Taking Charge of Your Business as the theme of this year's conference, which is appropriate to this group of influential information entrepreneurs. The formal presentations focused more on the various aspects of running a business than on how to research a topic, use technology, or create policy, although those topics were not totally neglected either. AIIP faces challenges as an organization, as do many professional associations. Its membership is gene...

  • Casual Web browsers and nonexpert searchers are fascinated by the mysterious allure of the deep Web. To them, it's an exotic but elusive treasure trove of precious information, hidden even from the otherwise omnipotent Google. The latest would-be hero to face the deep Web quest is DeepDyve (www.deepdyve.com), which describes itself as "The largest online rental service for scientific, technical and medical research." DeepDyve was founded in 2005 by two scientists who bemoaned the fact that access to proprietary Web content was confined to researchers affiliated with institutional subscribers such as universities and corporations. DeepDyve indexes about 8,500 journals from reputable STM commercial publishers and professional associations. Its strongest areas are medicine and life science...

  • As Vietnam emerges into world markets, Vietnamese organizations are facing the predicament of how to avoid the low-cost labor trap and move up the production value-chain by improving quality and productivity. Continuous improvement (CI) practices have proved fundamental to building and sustaining competitive advantage in other Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. If Vietnamese organizations are to pursue higher value-added activities, CI will be critical for them, too. Despite the tremendous interest in Vietnam from the international business community, little research on Vietnamese management practices has been done, particularly on the use of CI techniques. The language barrier, lack of reliable business data, and the culture of government and corporate secrecy in V...

  • GROWTH POTENTIAL Since the collapse of Enron, the accounting profession has operated under a magnifying glass, with regulators, politicians, and journalists looking for the next case of balance sheet gimmickry or bogus income statements. "It was during that time that students with traditional CPA skill sets were attracted to the technology profession and the potential to cash in on the dot-com market," Gale said. While this shouldn't be a deciding factor in your search for a CPA, memberships in associations such as the American Institute of CPAs or WICPA show a commitment to a professional code of ethics and ongoing learning.
