In the past, the Navajos have used a word for cancer, lood doo na'dziihii, that when translated into English means, "the sore that does not heal." The death sentence implied in this translation has contributed to a feeling among too many Navajo cancer sufferers that cancer is a diagnosis without hope.
Indeed, according the New Mexico Cancer Plan published through the state Department of Health, breast cancer is the leading cause of death for Hispanic, American Indian, and African American women in New Mexico. Now, a translation project is under way to make breast-cancer information more accessible to the people of the Navajo Nation and to communicate the important message that, especially when detected early, cancer can be healed.
