A business information system represents all the tasks involved in providing the information required by a certain business activity. The techniques, tools and procedures comprising the system may be employed manually or by a computer.
Accountants in both business and industry can play a significant role in plans to implement information technology systems. The cost analysis expertise that accountants possess can be applied to assessing the strategic advantages to be obtained by greater use of technology. Accountants can also investigate usage of electronic data interchange or the development of new systems. Performance measurement functions can be applied to assess benefits once the information systems are implemented.
Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) systems provide real-time access to key business performance indicators (KPI's). Access to real-time KPI's is said to improve the speed and effectiveness of business operations through the provision of low-latency measures of enterprise performance. Discovery-Oriented BAM is introduced as a BAM system that combines historical contextual data from Business Intelligence (BI) to improve real-time event monitoring and KPI provisioning, in critical business operations. This paper explores the issues and challenges associated with Discovery-Oriented BAM systems implementation, as well as suggestions for future research directions.
