The United Mine Workers union wants to save Blair Mountain but decided against joining this week's 50-mile trek to advocate for the site's preservation. The union and the marchers both want to save the Logan County landmark, which was the site of a bloody 1921 battle over unionization. The mountain could be surface-mined by the coal companies that own it. The marchers also want stronger unions in the state, another point the UMW can support.

A federal agency is proposing new rules that would regulate drug and alcohol testing in the nation's mines, but the association representing mine owners says the proposed language doesn't go far enough.
Linn-Co Federal Credit Union has three branches - in Lebanon, Albany and Sweet Home. When the credit union decided to renovate the branches to better reflect the Linn County community, it brought in designer Andrea Bainbridge of Bainbridge. The credit union's design group wanted the branches to reflect the community's relationship with the timber industry and local rivers, as well as its status as the "grass-seed king of the world.
