The utopian dream of a United States of Europe is coming apart at the seams. Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain are all on the verge of default, which would push the rest of the common market into the abyss. For once, Paris is refusing to surrender and continues to fight the inevitable downgrade of France's credit rating. The European Central Bank isn't strong enough to do much to prevent a continental banking meltdown. Overall, European economic chaos makes U.S. fiscal indiscipline look manageable. This is slim comfort, however, because in the modern global economy, we all sink or swim together.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Efforts to close Florida's internet sales tax loophole gathered steam Wednesday with the release of a new economic study showing that ending special tax treatment for internet-only sellers could pave the way for reductions in the state's corporate, sales or property tax rates. The Florida Alliance for Main Street Fairness, which includes the Florida Retail Federation, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Florida, held a conference call with reporters to discuss the study. Unbeknownst to most Floridians, current state law requires individual consumers to remit sales taxes for the purchases they make online. The panelists agreed that the government needs to create more incentives for landowners and industry to preserve habitat. Their soon-to-be-published final report will include suggestions to strengthen habitat protection programs in the Farm Bill, and to legally authorize, for the first time, "cooperative conservation agreements" between landowners and the federal government.
