The theory of constraints is an industrial management technique that can be utilized to systematically evaluate flaws in production and manufacturing operations. The production activities should be evaluated based on variable data such as the product prices, manufacturing process, sales forecasts and market demand. A flow chart is then formulated to reduce time constraints and production inefficiencies.

Much recent attention in industrial practice has been centered on the question of which activities a manufacturing firm should complete for itself and for which it should rely on outside suppliers. This issue, generally labeled the "make-buy" decision, has received substantial theoretical and empirical attention. In this paper, we broaden the scope of the make-buy decision to include product design decisions, as well as production decisions. First, we examine independently the decisions of whether to internalize design and production, and then we consider how design and production organizational decisions are interdependent. The specific research questions we address are: (1) How can design and production sourcing decisions be described in richer terms than "make" and "buy"? (2) Do exis...

A production monitoring system provides additional information from the shop floor to gain a more objective analysis of production processes. An ideal system should be a model of the existing production system. Actual plant controls for data collection and real-time display should also be used. Data should be systematically stored in a common high speed resource. Finally, graphical user interface applications should be developed.

The production process is facilitated by implementing activity-based costing (ABC). Managers get to discover which activities are costing money and this knowledge makes them better able to control all costs more effectively instead of merely focusing on overhead costs. ABC's evolution into activity-based management has mandated that activities be classified into either value-added or non-value-added with managerial focus on the elimination of the non-value-added activities.

Expert systems are being applied to inventory control and production management. However, it is important to fully understand the technology's mechanisms and how it may be related to particular production problems since expert systems is basically in the infancy stage. The expert systems technology aims to reproduce in a consistent fashion the results of human experts instead of understanding the basic techniques used by these experts to come up with a given solution.

Manufacturing companies must have integrated sales and production management to maximize profitability. This can be achieved through evaluating the quality status of the production process relative to the marketing strategies to resolve any conflict that typically arises due to the autonomous functions of these two departments. The market's demands should be synchronized with the company's manufacturing capabilities to curb tensions between sales and production.
