Arthur Hoekstra of Clarence is a retired chemical engineer who, among other things, holds the patent on an engineering process related to the chemical production of sulfuric acid, an industrial chemical with a wide range of uses. Recently Hoekstra has been circulating accounts of his early experiences in Wisconsin. With his permission I share one of those accounts: We survived the Depression because my father had developed the skill of well drilling. He had bought a used water well drilling machine called a spudder. There was a drill bar 20 feet long by 4 inches in diameter that was lifted by a heavy, 3-inch diameter rope. The machine lifted the drill bar and dropped it several feet repeatedly. It could penetrate any soil and even solid rock.
Samsung Electronics Co Pres and CEO Jong-Yong Yun's philosophy of continuous improvement has helped Samsung weather Korea's financial crisis, making it stronger than ever. Yun specifically applied industrial engineering (IE) concepts to Samsung to cut production times and increase workers' productivity. Although he initially met resistance in implementing IE in the firm, Yun sponsored in-house training sessions for workers. He also trained 1,550 managers in IE concepts. Yun's centerpiece plans involve product innovation, process innovation and personnel innovation.

This paper provides a critical review of analytic research on the business economics of product reuse inspired by industrial practice. Insights and critical assumptions are provided for each paper. We further classify the research into four streams: industrial engineering/operations research, design, strategy, and behavioral, and present a framework linking these streams. We find that some modeling assumptions risk being institutionalized, and suggest a renewed exploration of industrial practice. Future research should also include empirical work on consumer behavior, product diffusion, and valuation of returns.

Coal extraction in West Virginia is accomplished generally by underground or surface mining. BOTH methods of coal extraction require the placement of fill structures, commonly referred to as valley fills in acknowledgment of the steeply sloped terrain that exists in West Virginia within small, usually ephemeral and intermittent gullies and erosional features. Underground mining techniques, which account for the majority of West Virginias coal production, utilize machinery to drive tunnels under the surface of the land.
