A study of air pollution in Paterson found significantly higher levels of pollutants - some of which increase the risk of cancer -- than in a comparison rural community, the result of the city's concentration of commercial and industrial facilities.
The study by the state Department of Environmental Protection concludes that efforts should be made to identify industrial sites for pollution prevention audits, identify some facilities for further investigation, retrofit some vehicle fleets to reduce their emissions, and launch an educational campaign about the pollution caused by idling vehicles for long periods.
