A global study of skin samples from sperm whales has uncovered evidence of an "alarmingly high" level of industrial pollution in the world's oceans, according to a University of Southern Maine scientist who co-authored a new report on the research. Nearly all of the samples taken from 361 sperm whales during a five-year voyage around the world contained chromium, an industrial pollutant that causes cancer in humans, the authors said.

For those who prefer their Superfund sites with a more urban feel, [Sol Lyn] is a mere 15 minutes away. From Geneva, hop on 1-45 North and take South Loop 610 West just past Almeda, behind the feeder road. Sol Lyn is surrounded by businesses, from a tire store to Carmen's Boutique, a favorite local source for adult novelties. In the 1970s, Sol Lyn was a scrap metal and electrical transformer salvage and recycling facility. This explains its outstanding concentration of trichloroethylene, or TCE. The chemical is found in older electronics and is what makes the fumes from Wite-Out so addlingly delightful. TCE also causes brain damage, coma, and death in sufficient concentrations, but you can safely enjoy TCE in water with up to 5 parts per billion. At one point, Sol Lyn's groundwater had ...

Historical scholarship on business-environment interactions has largely sidestepped the study of corporate innovations that had both economic and environmental benefits. This issue is examined through late-nineteenth-century initiatives sponsored by the British Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, whose aim was to document and promote the creation of profitable by-products out of polluting industrial waste and emissions. A case is made that the individuals involved in this effort not only anticipated concepts and debates now at the heart of the modern sustainable development literature, but also that their work questions some fundamental premises of this discourse.

Clean Air Act Needed in Countryside, Not Just in Metro Areas: Citing Health Concerns, New Report Calls For End of Pollution Exemptions for Livestock Operations; Major Pollution Exposures Detailed At Mega-Farming Operations Across U.S., Including CA, IN, IA and NC. WASHINGTON, March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New federal and industry data show that the air at some factory farm test sites in the U.S. is dirtier than in America's most polluted cities and exposes workers to concentrations of pollutants far above occupational safety guidelines, according to a new report from the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP). While the measurements were taken onsite at factory farms, the pollution levels are high enough to suggest that those living near these massive livestock operations also...
