After giving millions in tax breaks to Virginia-based Avalon Bay Communities toward an apartment project in Rockville Centre, the Hempstead Industrial Development Agency has been urged by labor unions to take the money back.
Eager to spur investment, provide jobs and increase the local tax base, the Hempstead IDA granted Avalon more than $10 million in tax breaks toward the $90 million, 349-unit rental complex, now being built on the site of the polluted former Darby Drugs.
